Development of a fiber-binder-packing layer construction for resource minimization in soil stabilization and unbound structures in traffic infrastructures

The aims of research project “BewehrtePacklageKonstruktion” are (1) to develop a sustainable and fast acting fiber-binder-packing layer composite construction for soil stabilization and plate action with traction and bending moment absorption and (2) to develop and test the required quality controls in intrinsic and external monitoring, as well as the area-wide dynamic compaction control (FDVK) required during the installation and compaction process. Attention is also given to a construction that can be applied in an on-site recycling manner such as road rehabilitation.

The project is a joint attempt to overcome the problem which comes with the increasing traffic capacity demand which up to now results in increasing road construction thickness which leads to economic and environmental strain.

The first objective is to be achieved through geometrical intervention between the supporting subsoil and the bearing layer and by increasing the bearing capacity of the layer itself by inclusion of tensile enhancer (mineralized) matter in a mixture of bounded or unbounded material. It is in the scope of the project then to design, analyze and optimize the geometrical intervention as well as the potency of the material mixture as individual part and as a component to the construction system through experimental set up and numerical approach.

The above work is consequentially followed by development and testing of field installation method which must avoid unnecessary manual operation. For the second objective, hardware and software development of quality control process which can be applied in intrinsic and external monitoring, as well as the area-wide dynamic compaction control (FDVK) required during the installation and compaction process is to be performed.
